George Jones was born in Savannah, the son of Noble Wimberly Jones. He studied medicine under his father and practiced for several years. He was in the Revolutionary War in it last years, served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature, was an Alderman and Mayor of Savannah, judge of the Eastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia, and a member of the U.S. Senate in 1807. Hugh McCall (1767-1824) was born in North Carolina, but when he was about 5 years old the family moved to South Carolina. In 1794 he became an officer in the United States Army, and when he was mustered out in 1815, he was a Brevet Major. In 1818 he became a military storekeeper in Savannah, a position he also held in Charleston, South Carolina in 1821. From 1806 until 1823 he was the jailer at Savannah.
